Like all seasoned umpires know, holding up the hand in baseball not only means that the pitcher shall not pitch, it means "Time out", so no runners can advance and no outs can be made. Otherwise, the runner from third could be dashing for the plate, and the pitcher wouldn't know whether he can throw to the catcher or not!

All experienced plate umpires know that their duty doesn't end at the plate. They also must cover the batter-runner when their partner runs into the outfield for a trouble ball in a two-man system. Here, international umpire Erick Barkhuis makes his way back to the plate after just such a play.

"Little League Debut"

Dutch umpire and honorary member of WCUA Erick Barkhuis working one of his first Little League games ever in East Greenwich, RI. He worked three games during his vacation in the States before returning to his home country. "It's been a thrill and a privilege working with these kids, their coaches and the umpires", Erick said.
